In an effort to understand the growth mechanics and improve the material quality of InGaN alloys, a key material in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes (LDs), and solar cells, the team of Dr. Ougazzaden in collaboration with Gilles Patriache's team ( LPN-CNRS) developed a new method that quantifies the chemical information “coded” in HAADF-STEM images and produces precise mappings of the chemical composition of compound semiconductor alloys at the nanometer scale. A paper describing the method and the results of its applications has been published in Nanotechnology journal, where the innovative character of the method prompted the editors to chose the paper for the cover of issue 45 of volume 23 of the journal (see photograph).

L'Office Parlementaire d'Evaluation des choix scientifiques et Technologiques (OPECST) a organisé le 26 mai 2011 une audition publique autour d'une étude liée aux innovations futures. A cette occassion le professeur Abdallah Ougazzaden, Directeur de l'UMI GT-CNRS, a abordé la place des nanotechnologies et les précautions qu'il convient de prendre avant de les utiliser.

Deux postes de chercheur en détachement à l'UMI GeorgiaTech-CNRS UMI 2958

L'UMI Georgia Tech-CNRS accueillera en détachement pour 1 an deux chargés de recherche ou enseignants-chercheur dans les thématiques de l'Electrical engineering, la robotique et la neuroengineering Les chercheurs détachés rejoindront le laboratoire de l'UMI à Georgia Institute of Technology à Atlanta et mèneront des activités de recherche dans l'un des deux domaines cités dans les appels. Ils ingèreront soit l'équipe du Pr. David Citrin soit le Pr. Magnus Egersted de GT-ECE. Les candidats détachés pourront aussi renforcer le partenariat entre les équipes de Georgiatech et son laboratoire en France. Ils pourront aussi participer à des programmes américains (NSF, DOE…) et à des programmes Franco-Americains. Visit of Mr. Charles H. Rivkin at GTL

On October 20, 2011, Georgia Tech Lorraine has been honored to welcome His Excellency, Mr Charles H. Rivkin, US Ambassador to France. His visit started with a welcome and a Presentation of GT-Lorraine. Then, Ambassador Rivkin visited the campus where he met with PhD students and viewed their research, and addressed the student body about leadership, the importance of mentors and an international outlook, and of having the courage to follow their dreams.

Nano4m project

Nano4m, which involves four regions and twelve partners, whose UMI GT-Lorraine, aims at improving strategies and building networks to design nanotechnology for market. The project tackles some of the challenges identified in relation to the functioning of the regional innovation systems with the following objectives:

To improve the regions' capacity to shorten the gap between R&D and market testing new Research-to-Market processes (R2M)

To strengthen the interregional collaboration by identifying and developing specific research and business opportunities of common interest in the emerging field of nano/microtechnology

To increase competitiveness of innovation infrastructure at regional, national and European level

To improve the efficiency of regional innovation policies by drawing recommendations and implementing best practices.

The different profiles of the regional R+D+I strategies of these four regions as well as their common interest on several markets/technologies are the best basis for the project to reach its objectives. Each region is represented by a Regional or Local Authority and one or two Research and Technological Centers.

The implementation of new knowledge obtained through interdisciplinary collaboration will be used for the development of feasibility studies concerning the market opportunities of new products in the nano/micro areas and identifying success and failure factors for Research to Market process in each region. Furthermore, the expertise obtained in the expert groups will also be embedded in the elaboration of strategic plans for the participating research and technology centres.

Nano4m will contribute to the INTERREG IVC goal of improving the efficiency of regional policies by drawing up recommendations for Regional Innovation Policies.
